ABOUT US

ABOUT PURLEY YOUTH PROJECT

The aim of the Centre is to provide an environment where the following objectives of the PYP can flourish:

To create a trusting relationship with young people so that they can recognise their own worth and the contribution they can make to the life and welfare of the community in Purley and the wider society.

To assist young people in meeting the pressures, challenges and temptations of a modern and fragmented society and forming their own moral standards and defences.

To assist young people in channelling their energies and enthusiasm in healthy pursuits.

Most of these activities are run after school so the Centre is available to hire during the day for community/health-based activities.

The centre has a small hall, (The Alistair Black Room), a large sports hall, a social bar area, a kitchen, a counselling room, an office, & toilets. It is on the first floor at the rear of Purley United Reformed Church.

There is a lift which is about to be replaced to conform with 2016 regulations. We are close to all amenities being on the Brighton Road, there is easy access by public transport and a car part next door there is also limited parking that can be arranged for hirers on the church site.

WHO WE ARE

Purley Youth Project (PYP) was set up as a charity in 1985; local churches wanted a safe place for children to go as there was nothing else in the area. In 1996 the self-contained Purley Youth Centre was built at the rear of Purley United Reform Church.

The aims of PYP are to offer through discussion, informal education and activities ways of meeting their social, personal and spiritual needs, whilst helping them contact and develop relationships with young people in central Purley and throughout the borough. We also want to enable young people to learn more about themselves and of the society of which they are part.

What do you do?  We offer a wide range of sports and activities including arts & crafts.

When do you meet?  On Wednesday between 5.00pm and 7.00pm and on Saturday morning between 9.30am and 12.30am.

Where do you meet?  At Purley Youth Centre behind Purley United Reform Church, Brighton Road, Purley.

Contact: pypjuniors@gmail.com for details about coming along.

BACKGROUND OF THE PURLEY YOUTH PROJECT

The Purley Youth Project (PYP) is a charity that was originally set up by six local churches in 1987. Three sponsor PYP (St. Marks, St Swithun’s and Purley United Reform Church) and Purley United Reform Church also remains actively involved.

PYP is managed by the Trustee Board who meet regularly to discuss the upkeep and activities of Purley Youth Centre and to support PYP Juniors.

The aim of the junior club is to provide a safe environment for the children, where they can relax, play, socialise, develop their artistic side and learn how to become a responsible citizen, cooperating with each other and developing their social skills.
